inconsistantly rubbish

I can’t figure out my flash, well… I kinda can, but if you looked up the word ‘inconsistant’ in the Oxford English Dictionary, you’d see a badly lit picture of me trying to bounce my flash and drag my shutter. I haven’t snapped anything with it that I like yet.

I’ve been reading and reading… and one thing I noticed was that some people said that if you’re bouncing (whilst dragging your shutter), to power up the flash to +2 compensation which I haven’t tried yet.

I’m also finding it tricky to find a nice balance for fill flash too… Paul always has raccoon eyes, so he’s a really good subject to test it on… but so far I’ve just been overpowering it a little… not too much, but it’s not looking natural enough for me. If anyone has any tips I’d be really interested in hearing them.

I’ve bought one of those off-shoe cords aswell, haven’t got it yet… but I’m hoping I’ll be able to have a bit more control over where I’m bouncing the light. Obvious problem is that my camera is already sodding heavy with the 135mm on… I doubt I’ll be able to hold it successfully one-handed whilst bouncing the flash.

Anyway, back to natural light… here’s a couple from the other evening:

could this get any shallow dof-ier?

it’s a model thing…

My flash came this afternoon and it’s taking about a billion hours to charge the batteries so I can’t play yet… grr.

I went out with my camera anyway and took a few this evening while there was some gorgeous light about. I haven’t been through them yet, but I’m hoping for some decent backlit stuff. Or just some decent stuff in general would be nice.

Anyway, the point of this post… not that my posts generally have points…

I’ve been having problems with my models lately, they’re getting demanding, snooty and difficult to work with… what can you expect huh?

Here’s a couple from the past month that I haven’t shared.

Here’s my beautiful sister-in-law Helen, she’s a star… but she gets uncomfortable and fidgety when I pull the camera out:

Soopah Sister-in-law!

Paul let me take a picture if I promised not to show his face:

And this one, well… he’s the exception… he happily poses like this for hours… my kinda model:

8 things…

…So, the delightful Lulu tagged me to list 8 interesting things about myself… which wasn’t easy and just about did my last brain cell in.

1). I harbour secret desires to be a 1940s femme fatale, or at least to look like one. Wrap dresses, stockings, pin curls and red lipstick. Oh and as far as I’m aware this has nothing to do with repressed sexual deviance… I’m simply a wannabe Ann Savage/Lana Turner/Jane Greer. I’m also a huge film noir nut which is most likely where this all stems from. If you ever get the chance to watch ‘Detour’, then please do!

2). I’m a surviving twin. I unfortunately know nothing about my twin, not even gender. Mum was scheduled for a D&C after she miscarried as no-one was aware she was carrying twins. It was only the last minute intervention of a curious trainee Polish doctor that prevented the D&C going ahead. He discovered a faint heartbeat and Mum was admitted into the hospital immediately, where she stayed for the next couple of months being injected with various drugs to prevent me making an appearance until I had a chance of survival.

3). I was a Southampton Football (soccer) Club season ticket holder for nearly 7 years and travelled all over the country to away matches. I think my husband was really excited that his wife loved football, unfortunately for him I can’t be arsed with it nowadays.

4). My best subject at school was French, but I was too good and I got complacent. I waltzed into A Level French in college thinking I didn’t have to do any work and quickly got left behind by girls SO much better than me. Lesson learnt.

5). I went to university wanting to be either a film/video editor or journalist. I spent 3 years doing a degree where I ended up loving half of the subject (cultural studies) and hating the other half (media). I pretty much disliked everyone that took the degree, they were generally wannabe Children’s TV presenters… I wouldn’t have been surprised if they grouped together to immolate themselves just for some extra attention on a Monday morning. I’m still £11,000 in debt from it… but hey, at least I can put some fancy letters after my name right?

6). I met my husband on the internet when I was 19 after coming home from spending almost a year in Australia and finding that I didn’t really know what to do with myself once I’d got back. I kinda outgrew all my friends and just wanted to go back to Sydney. As money and other obligations wouldn’t allow it, I discovered that I’d rather spend my evenings in an internet chatroom instead of being out clubbing. My husband only came into above said chatroom to troll and rip the piss out of all the sad gits that spent their evenings tapping away at the keyboard, luckily for me, he became one of them.

7). I’m addicted to The Avengers (60s b&w/early colour not the New Avengers or that crappy 90s film). I (heart) Tara King and went through a Mod phase in my late teens… Mary Quant type dresses and a sharp bob… oh the shame.

8). I have a skin ‘condition’ called Dermographia which basically means I can write on my skin. It only needs a really light stroke of my nail and up pops whatever I’ve written a few seconds later, red and slightly raised. Thankfully it doesn’t look gross. The condition seems to cause some people problems… so mine must be quite mild. For me, it’s a neat party trick… just call me the human post-it note.

Well that’s me done, hope I haven’t bored you too much!

I’m trying not to double up on people who’ve already been tagged, apologies if you don’t want to do this or have already been tagged. Feel free to ignore it. Anyway, without further ado… I’m passing this on to the captivating Christie, marvellous Monyeen, scintillating Sue and the heavenly Heather (how cool is alliteration?)

Hopefully, I’ll have some pics to share in the next post… my 430ex arrived today!

when you get a song stuck in your head…

…it often sounds a lot like this:

‘Koop - Come to Me’

I’m also currently driving myself slowly loopy at my incredible ability to misplace things.

It’s a bit of a joke really, I find one thing only to immediately lose another. My epitaph will surely read: ‘Charlotte Thompson spent 6yrs of her life looking for various crap that she misplaced, if only she’d been more organised’.

So far today I’ve lost and subsequently found:

deodorant
tablets
shoes
TV guide
remote control
cigarettes (100 of them)
client’s phone number
phone charger

I wouldn’t mind, but I’ve only been up for 6 hours. I also forgot it was a Bank Holiday weekend, so spent today working… my clients now think I am either incredibly dedicated to fixing their IT problems, or… and far more likely, that I simply have no life at all.

Please tell me I’m not the only one who does this? Please?

In other news, I found what appears to be the coolest supermarket in the world this weekend (other than the bulk-buying paradise which is Makro). Yau Brothers is a Chinese Wholesalers that stocks all my favourite sauces in the world and at a ridiculously low price compared to the normal supermarkets. For example, one of my favouritest things to eat in the world is Laksa, I’ve only found one supermarket in this country where you can buy the paste and it’s £5 a jar, in Yau Brother’s it’s £1.10 a jar! They thankfully let the public in, otherwise I was planning on starting a one-person demonstration by chaining myself to the gates. I’m in food Heaven.

It’s really unfortunate that I’m supposed to be on a diet.

please forgive me

So I’ve been in hiding… stalking and lurking on all your blogs, jealously eyeing up your gorgeous images and feeling too sorry for myself to even do the decent thing and comment.  Feeling sorry for myself ‘cos I’m in the mother of all creative funks and the jealousy that rises inside me when I view your gorgeous posts is pure evil.  I’m sorry.

Maybe it’s the time of year, maybe it’s ‘cos it’s getting darker a couple of minutes earlier as each night passes.  I hate saying goodbye to the summer.

Anyway, I promised to show the completed dog book thing… so here it is:

dogbook1

dogbook2

I used mounting card, double sided sticky tape, ribbon and a hole punch in true DIY style.  My cousin loved it, I’m so relieved!  Please excuse my ribbon tying… I’m also really jealous of people who can do those perfect little bows, mine are always crooked.

I spent last week at my brother’s house looking after Beethoven the greyhound while they went to Prague for a week, lucky sods!  Only problem is, I’m now totally smitten with their dog and miss him like mad… the little bastards are really good at making you fall in love with them huh?

dog or giraffe?

How much do I love funny shadows!

p.s. wish my legs were really that long…

… ok well not THAT long, that would just be freak-show freakish.

puppy dog eyes

Ok, so now I’ve gotten over my hypochondriosis (that so needs to be a real word if it isn’t), I thought I’d share some pics of my cousin’s new puppy Bella.

I’ve got them printed and tomorrow I’m gonna try and put together a little album of the pics for my cousin’s birthday.

Bella is the most adorable little chocolate labrador, everytime I see her I just have to pinch her little rolls of chub… proper puppy fat!

Anyway, without further ado… meet Bella:

how can you resist?

please play with me

bored of that now too...

entertaining herself instead

ignoring you now

hmmph

are you sure you didn't say 'walk'?

maybe not

did someone say 'walk'?

still bored

bored

It's a dog's life

I think my fav is the last one.

As an aside, I just bought Photokit Sharpener, and I feel the need to spread the word and whole heartedly recommend it… for web sharpening, I still always just do duplicate layer, sharpen>sharpen and fade opacity rather than faff about with USM values… but for print sharpening… ohmyword… Photokit got it spot on with very little work on my part.

Will share some pics of the completed album tomorrow if I get it done and stop procrastinating!

bad blogger, BAD blogger

I’ve got the bloggin’ blues…

…and I’ve got it bad.

Sorry for the lack of updates, I’d like to say that I’ve been incredibly busy inventing the successor to the wheel, or single-handedly saving starving villages in Africa.  But I haven’t, so I won’t.

Instead I’ve been having blood tests and watching lots of telly.  By the way, is it normal for your arm to look like this after a blood test or did the nurse vent some personal anger on me?  She said that the vein collapsed halfway through and apparently I’m pretty tricky to get blood from.

It looks kinda small and pathetic in that picture, but honestly… it like takes up my entire arm and I think it might drop off… Oh and I’m well aware that I’m also the world’s biggest hypochondriac and that with the lights turned off, I’m pale enough to glow.

Moving on from that…

I met Cristy from ILP again last Saturday which was fun!  We had a picnic, and although her little girl wasn’t really up for any picture-taking I still had a blast.  Which reminds me… I figured that seeing as I was actually going to make the effort to leave the house and meet with someone that I’m not comfortable enough to belch infront of I should also make an effort to put some make-up on.

Really. Bad. Idea.

I think I’ve got some facial fungal bacterial rash thing from using my old make up.  I think it was the powder (one of those wet/dry ones).  I’ve got little bumps on my face and as it’s (slowly) healing it’s turning really dry and flakey.  I’ve been refusing to leave the house until it clears up, so please send some supplies ‘cos I’m getting hungry.

Now, hopefully you will understand and forgive my bad blogging and commenting… I’ve just been too traumatised by life in general.

Oh and now you can put away those violins, I’m done.

buying in bulk

A couple of quick snaps from this afternoon:

More flowers...

These are outside my front door, dunno what they are.

And on a completely different note,

I’ve discovered that one of the benefits of being self-employed is that it opens doors to wholesale stores, I love going to my local wholesaler and just being completely irresponsible.

I buy huge tubs of sweets, enough loo roll to gift wrap the house (you can never have enough loo roll right?), individually wrapped biscuits (like you get in hotels)… just ‘cos I can, oh and those little individual baby hand soaps… they’re too cute to resist.

I got a mega tub of black olives (don’t like green ones)… and I’m over-the-top disappointed, they taste minging… they’re ultra strong, I think you’re supposed to just chop one up and use it in a salad or something.  Gutted.  They’re all wrinkly too, what’s that about?

My treat

Paul fared much better with his monthly sugar overdose.  Paul is a sweetie connoisseur and can take many many minutes deliberating about which ones to buy.  I dunno why though, he always ends up simply buying the most sour sweets he can find.  I tried one once, it practically turned my face inside out.

Paul's treat

You become everyone’s best friend when you have access to wholesale stores, I’m currently well in vogue, which makes a nice change!
